Design work requires individual creativity, application of advanced drafting techniques, and broad understanding of manufacturing and shipbuilding processes. Responsibilities include: Performs multiple, complex design assignments with the assistance of other designers within lower classifications.  Investigates, analyzes and makes recommendations to improve design processes.

Reviews work on assigned projects including layouts, arrangements, design, computations, and selection of material and equipment to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with Company and customer standards and specifications.  Prepares freehand sketches of basic engineering concepts and design solutions from which layout and/or detail drawings can be made. Often utilizes Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D - modeling equipment, such as Workstation Vivid or CATIA, to model systems and components, and create complex designs and layouts. Determines design characteristics and component configuration; investigates pertinent design factors such as availability of materials, interchangeability, etc.; evaluates and resolves interference; prepares bills of materials, etc. Prepares technical reports and correspondence concerning estimates, project progress and evaluations for review by appropriate management and engineering personnel.

Requires an associate's degree in drafting/engineering technology, or equivalent experience in design/drafting, plus a minimum of five years of relevant experience.

Naval marine experience is desirable. Candidates must have a broad knowledge of advanced design/drafting methods and concepts, and must be familiar with basic engineering, design or other principles relating to a specific area of work. Effective communication skills are essential. Should be proficient in use of all applicable CAD equipment. Must be knowledgeable of all applicable MIL-SPEC/STD's. May require the ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites, including those aboard ships under various stages of construction or overhaul, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling, stooping, standing, etc.

Piping Designer - Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

Basic Qualifications: A.S. Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and at least eight (8) years of related experience. Requires Piping Design background using ISDP (Intergraph) Software as well as Pipe Detailing/Fabrication experience.
Candidates should be familiar with piping Navy standards or HVAC Navy standards.
